Step 1: Register on the NBI Clearance portal
Go to the official NBI Clearance Online Services portal ↗ and create an account with your email address. Enter your details exactly as they appear on your valid ID and PSA birth certificate, including your full middle name. Mismatches are a common cause of delays.
Only use the official government website. Fake "NBI" pages and social-media accounts circulate regularly.
Step 2: Choose your purpose, branch and schedule
Select the purpose of your clearance (for example local employment, travel abroad or visa application), then choose an NBI branch or clearance centre and an available date. Slots at popular branches fill quickly, so book a few days ahead.
Step 3: Pay the clearance fee
After booking, the system generates a reference number. Pay through the listed online or over-the-counter payment channels before your appointment. The government clearance fee is modest, plus a small payment-channel service fee. Check the portal for the current amounts.
Step 4: Appear for biometrics and photo
Bring your reference number and at least one valid government ID. Commonly accepted IDs include the Philippine passport, PhilSys National ID, driver's licence, UMID, PRC ID and postal ID. Your photo, fingerprints and signature are captured on site.
What a "HIT" means
A HIT means your name matched, or closely matched, a record in the NBI database. It does not mean you have a criminal record. Many common Filipino names get hits. You will be given a return date, usually several working days later, while the record is verified. Occasionally you may be asked to appear for a quality-control interview.
Renewal and clearance for use abroad
If you have a previous NBI clearance, the portal's renewal option can save you steps. Clearances are generally valid for one year from issuance. If you need your NBI clearance for use abroad, such as for a visa or work permit, the receiving country may require a DFA apostille. See our apostille assistance.
