Do Filipinos need a visa for Japan?
Yes. Ordinary Philippine passport holders generally need a visa to visit Japan for tourism, visiting relatives or friends, or short business trips. Japan does not currently offer visa-free entry to ordinary Philippine passports, so plan your application before you buy non-refundable flights.
Japan has been rolling out an online eVISA system for some nationalities and travel purposes. Whether you apply online or on paper, check the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines ↗ for the channel that applies to you before you start.
How Japan visa applications work in the Philippines
For most short-term visas, the embassy does not accept applications directly from walk-in applicants. Paper applications are lodged through travel agencies accredited by the Embassy of Japan. The agency checks that your file is complete, submits it and releases your passport when the embassy is done.
- Identify your visa type — tourism, visiting relatives, visiting friends or business.
- Prepare your documents — the core set plus purpose-specific papers (see the checklist below).
- Lodge through an accredited agency — or the official online channel if it applies to you.
- Wait for processing — usually several working days after the embassy receives the file, longer in peak season.
- Claim your passport — check the visa sticker for name, dates and number of entries.
Japan tourist visa document checklist
The exact list depends on who is paying for the trip and why you are travelling. Commonly requested items for a self-funded tourist include:
- Philippine passport, valid for your whole stay, with at least two blank pages and your signature
- Completed and signed visa application form
- One recent photo meeting the embassy's size and background specifications
- PSA birth certificate, issued within the past year
- PSA marriage certificate, if married
- Bank certificate (original), issued recently
- Income Tax Return (ITR / BIR Form 2316), if employed or self-employed
- Daily itinerary or schedule of stay in Japan
If a relative or friend in Japan is inviting or guaranteeing you, you will usually also need an invitation letter, a letter of guarantee, proof of relationship and the host's residence and income documents. If a family member in the Philippines is sponsoring you, add proof of relationship and the sponsor's financial documents.

How much show money do I need for a Japan visa?
The embassy does not publish a fixed minimum bank balance. What matters is that your funds are believable for your trip length, consistent with your job and income, and not suddenly deposited just before you apply. A modest balance with a steady history is stronger than a large, unexplained deposit.

Common reasons Japan visas are denied
- Documents that contradict each other — for example, the itinerary, leave dates and employment certificate do not match
- Financial documents that do not support the length or cost of the trip
- Incomplete or unsigned forms, or a photo that does not meet specifications
- Previous overstays or immigration violations
- A purpose of travel that is unclear or not supported by documents
A denied applicant is generally not allowed to reapply for the same purpose for a period of time. That makes it far better to get the first application right than to rush it.
