Do Filipinos need a visa for South Korea?
In most cases, yes. Ordinary Philippine passport holders need a visa for tourism in mainland Korea. There are limited exceptions. Visa-free entry to Jeju Island on a direct flight has applied to many nationalities, including Filipinos. Holders of certain valid visas or residence permits from other countries may also qualify for transit or short visa-free entry. These rules change, so confirm them with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines ↗ before travelling.
How Korea visa applications are lodged
Applications for short-term visas are generally submitted through the embassy's designated channels and accredited travel agencies, not walked in by the applicant. Expect to submit the original documents and wait several working days for a decision, more in peak months.
Korea tourist visa checklist (employed applicants)
- Philippine passport valid for at least six months, plus a photocopy of the bio page
- Completed visa application form with a recent photo
- Certificate of employment showing position, date hired and salary
- Bank certificate and recent bank statements
- Income Tax Return (BIR Form 2316)
- Copies of previous visas or entry stamps, if any
Self-employed: replace the certificate of employment with your DTI or SEC registration, mayor's or business permit and business ITR. Students: add a certificate of enrolment or school ID and your parents' financial documents with your PSA birth certificate. Sponsored: add the sponsor's financial documents and proof of relationship.
Tips for a stronger Korea application
- Previous travel to countries such as Japan, the US or Schengen states strengthens your profile, so include copies
- Make your financial documents consistent with your salary and position
- Submit well before your flight. Processing can slow down during spring and autumn peak seasons
